The 10th Man to Walk on the Moon will appear at the Mitchell Opera House!
United States Air Force Brigadier General and NASA Astronaut Charlie Duke will be in Mitchell Indiana on July 21, 2018 to participate in the Galactic Gathering II presented by the Virgil I. Grissom Memorial, Inc.
Charlie Duke is one of only 12 men who have walked on the moon. Charlie was the lOth man to step foot on the lunar surface on April 21, 1972, and he was the youngest to ever do so. Today only five men remain with us and only two of these five speak about their time on the moon. Charlie Duke is one of those two.
Charlie was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 16. He along with astronaut John Young spent 20 hours walking on the surface ofthe moon during his extravehicular activities (EVA) conducting experiments and bringing rocks home so scientists could study them.
General Duke was the voice inside the control room as Neil Armstrong made man’s first steps on the moon. Charlie was in communication with the crew of Apollo 11 as they landed the lunar module with only seconds of fuel remaining.
Charlie was backup lunar module pilot for Apollo 13 when he caught the measles. This incident grounded primary crew member Ken Mattingly as depicted in the movie Apollo 13. Due to Ken not having immunity to the measles he would be reassigned to a later mission, never contracting the measles. Charlie is a former Air Force fighter and test pilot. Charlie has multiple hours in jets such as F 101 Voodoo, F-104 Starfighter, and the T-33 Shootingstar aircraft.
On July 21st from 2:00pm to 4:00pm at the First Baptist Church in Mitchell, General Duke will be posing for photographs with the public. This is a ticketed event. General Duke will be making a presentation and taking questions at the Mitchell Opera House on July 21st at 7:00pm. This too is a ticketed event. Tickets may only be purchased by going to www.galacticgathering2018.eventbrite.com.
